there has been a lot of discussion about the true meaning of this song. i've read that even tim mcgraw himself who did his own cover wasn't sure the first time he heard of it. But i think therein lies the beauty of music - music should offer some amount of vagueness so that people of different circumstances can relate to it and so that it could reach to a wider audience.
this could be a song for my whole family and for my friends whom i have shared intimate relationships with, and to the love(s?) of my life. and the music just feels right, fits perfectly well with the message it tries to convey.
but let met tell you what i really think about this song. it's about somebody who got married for reasons other than love. the singer knows the inevitability of loneliness for this girl and he couldn't just do nothing when that happens. one day somewhere down the road, the girl will be sad and lonely, and the singer is asking the girl to let him be there for her. the girl could have been forced to marry her groom based on the line "dancin' little marionette" and i think that's soo sad knowing that there is this person, the singer, who cares so much about her, who is willing to give everything for her. (well, i'm not really sure about the feelings of the girl for the singer. and this brings me back to a possible reality that is both bitter and sad.)
Enough said, here it goes... the song written and originally performed by Ryan Adams.
"When The Stars Go Blue"
Dancin' where the stars go blue
Dancin' where the evening fell
Dancin' in your wooden shoes
In a wedding gown
Dancin' out on 7th street
Dancin' through the underground
Dancin' little marionette
Are you happy now?
Where do you go when you're lonely
Where do you go when you're blue
Where do you go when you're lonely
I'll follow you
When the stars go blue
Laughing with your pretty mouth
Laughing with your broken eyes
Laughing with your lover's tongue
In a lullaby
Where do you go when you're lonely
Where do you go when you're blue
Where do you go when you're lonely
I'll follow you
When the stars go blue
The stars go blue, stars go blue
