Yet another “derogatory,” “discriminatory” and “hurtful” case of humor...
The latest episode of Desperate Housewives, aired in the United States on Sept. 30, featured the character Susan Mayer(played by Teri Hatcher), who visited the office of Dr. Adam Mayfair. Mayfair hinted that Mayer might be experiencing signs of menopause and wanted her to take a blood test to be sure. Mayer agreed to take the test -- but only after demanding to check Mayfair’s credentials and making sure “they are not from some med (medical) school in the Philippines.”
That line is demeaning not only to the character and dignity of Filipino doctors, but to everyone who has a connection with the Philippines and its educational system. We are not that desperate!!!! I am joining the Filipino communities worlwide in denouncing that remark.
Here is some related FYI:
"For decades, the Philippines has been one of the main sources of foreign-trained health professionals in the United States -- a trend that is expected to continue as a severe shortage of nurses and other health workers grips the US health care system."
“The United States recognizes the academic standards of Philippine medical and nursing schools and, in general, does not require additional schooling in this country for Filipino health care professionals who wish to work there.”
"The Philippines is considered a top “medical tourism” destination for foreigners, including US citizens, who choose to undergo surgical and other medical procedures in the country because of its “high-quality and reasonably priced medical services”."
